In our fourth Late-Night Texting, we bring you over 25 bite-sized performances from Attempts, Brown Voices, Main Tulis Group, Pink Gajah Theatre, C42 Vault artists, and C42 Boiler Room playwrights.

Double Takes

DOUBLE TAKES features three 30-minute performances inspired by iconic plays from three different decades of Singapore theatre, developed by next-generation theatre-makers from the NUS Theatre Studies programme. Each work was previously presented as part of Centre 42’s VAULT programme, which invites artists to create contemporary responses to classic Singapore plays.

GOSSIP GRLs is a farce that examines the support staff of Grassroots Leaders (GRLs), inspired by the political environment of Robert Yeo’s ONE YEAR BACK HOME (1979). The performance follows the misadventures of a new volunteer joining the chaotic and competitive world of grassroots leadership. The play debuted in English at the M1 Singapore Fringe Festival and was translated into Mandarin for the Taipei Arts Festival in 2018. This is the first time Mandarin translation, PRETTY BUTCH x 不男不女, will be performed in Singapore.

DATING SIM (BETA) is a 30-minute participatory theatrical experience that takes the form of an interactive dating simulation game come to life, allowing the audience a closer examination of their agency and prejudices in modern dating and relationships.

In a not-so-distant future, the worldwide conglomerate ARC controls everything from cradle to grave. To boost fertility rates, ARC is beta-testing Mate-Match, an algorithm designed to find perfect matches for everyone. Groups of beta-testers will participate in a dating simulation where they’ll be asked to make choices collectively.
.

ATTEMPTS is a collective founded by Rei Poh that aims to engage and provoke, transforming audience into players, using participatory performances while providing a playground for like-minded artists to come on board to play and create their journey. They first debuted in 2018 at the M1 Singapore Fringe Festival with ATTEMPTS: SINGAPORE, a project developed in residence at Centre 42.

Amidst detritus and solitude, join in discussions of Singapore and Southeast Asian literature with other surviving authors. Later on in the night, our intrepid bookseller will regale you with tales of the apocalypse, survival, and her iron-clad will to set up a bookstore in a world where few book lovers persist.
