Video: Reimagining Singapore Theatre

Reimagining Singapore Theatre was held on 22 November 2014. This was presented by the M1 Singapore Fringe Festival 2015 in collaboration with Centre 42’s Living Room programme.

The discussion was facilitated by Festival Artistic Director Sean Tobin, and comprised of a panel of five 2015 Fringe artists:

  • Loo Zihan, whose work With/Out is a reimagining of The Necessary Stage’s 1999 production Completely With/Out Character;
  • Alvin Tan (The Necessary Stage), who will direct untitled women, previously staged in 2000, 2002 and 2003;
  • Joel Tan and Chen Yingxuan (Take Off Productions), who are working together again as playwright and director respectively on Mosaic, first staged at the Lit Up Festival 2013; and
  • Pat Toh, whose work Terra Incognita is an evolution from Homogeneous, presented at Esplanade’s The Studios RAW series in 2012.

The 75-minute talk has been repackaged into a 2-part video recording:

Part 1: Fringe artists provided a brief background of the original works, and an introduction to  the reimagined works for the 2015 festival.

Part 2: After providing the context framing their respective works, the artists shared their considerations, shifts in their intention, and the impact of dramaturgy in the process of re-creation. This clip also captured the questions from the audience and the artists’ responses.
