Amanda Leong is one of the five Citizen Reviewers selected from the 2019 Open Call application.

Amanda is a sophomore in Yale-NUS, majoring in Anthropology. She writes short stories, articles, essays and sometimes, art reviews. In her creative and academic pursuits, she explores the human condition: What makes people happy? How are things the way they are? When are things enough, or what makes people break?

She is fascinated with the sense of time and memory of a performance contained in art reviews and hopes to better capture these nuances in time.

In her free time, she likes keeping fit through Zumba.

Cordelia Lee is one of the seven Citizen Reviewers selected from the 2017 Open Call application. She has been invited to continue on in the 2018 and 2019 cycles.

A BA (Hons) graduate from the National University of Singapore, Cordelia rarely allows conventional boxes to confine her ideas and always has a way with words. This equips her to approach challenges creatively, strategically shape content, and on some days, generate meme-worthy puns.

Singapore’s vibrant, burgeoning arts scene excites Cordelia and she has previously conducted research on local emerging artists and community art groups. She pops into arts events, programmes and performances whenever she can, hoping to garner greater public attention to the theatrical arts through her writing and participation in open dialogues.

In addition, she is a photographer scurrying to capture Singapore’s changing landscapes, and a HIIT junkie who begins each day with an endorphin rush.

Edward Eng is one of the five Citizen Reviewers selected from the 2019 Open Call application.

Edward is a playwright whose work has been performed locally as well as in China and across the UK. He read Philosophy, Politics and Economics at university and is interested in using the lenses he has picked up there to celebrate the nooks and crannies of Singapore theatre.

Aside from the theatre, he spends much of his disposable income on hiking, skiing and brutal Korean movies. He also really, really, really loves nasi lemak.

At the time of writing, he would like to see a collaboration between Kuo Pao Kun, Frantic Assembly and Amateur Takes Control.

Idelle Yee is one of the five Citizen Reviewers selected from the 2019 Open Call application.

Idelle has moved on with alarming haste from being an appropriately meandering undergraduate at the National University of Singapore to one about to finish with a major in English Literature and a minor in Theatre Studies. The privilege of having been able to explore the arts is not lost on her, and she seeks to retain always a childlike generosity and humility in her appreciation of the arts in their startlingly varied forms, and also in her criticism of them. She believes very much in the importance of reviewing as a tool for advocacy and education, to journey alongside local practitioners and audience members alike in forging a more thoughtful, sensitive arts community.

She enjoys theatre research (particularly in the realm of intercultural theatre) and has Very Large and Considerable Soft Spots for musical theatre and chamber music. Other hobbies including dashing after public transport, religious poetry and Christian theology, very cheesy omnibus romance flicks, and considerate conversation. She also writes () and sings a little.

Jocelyn Chng is one of the 14 Citizen Reviewers selected from the 2016 Open Call application. She has been invited to continue on in the 2017, 2018 and 2019 cycles.

Jocelyn is a freelance educator, practitioner and writer in dance and theatre, and has written for various platforms since 2013, including The Flying Inkpot and Arts Equator. She holds a double Masters in Theatre Studies/Research, and a Postgraduate Diploma in Education (Dance Teaching). At the heart of her practice, both teaching and personal, lies a curiosity about personal and cultural histories; writing about performance allows her to engage with this curiosity. She sees performance criticism as crucial to the development of the performance landscape in Singapore, and a valuable opportunity to contribute to ongoing discussions about performance and society.

Liana Gurung is one of the three Citizen Reviewers selected from the 2018 Open Call application. She has been invited to continue on in the 2019 cycle.

With a Literature major’s love and propensity for over-analysing, Liana is a mostly-reader, sometimes-writer who was raised on a diet of musicals (read: Julie Andrews). Her attention has since turned to the gritty, innovative and often subversive world of the Singaporean play: the leaner, the tauter, the more spare – the better.

Beyond the many hours she spends immersed in fictional worlds, she might also be found in an airy third-floor office, trying her best to design (badly), playing Frisbee barefoot on turfed grass (badly), or curled up in bed, watching cooking videos (very contentedly).

Myle Yan Tay

Myle Yan Tay (Yan) is one of the seven Citizen Reviewers selected from the 2017 Open Call application. He has been invited to continue on in the 2018 and 2019 cycles.

Yan is currently studying in Yale-NUS College, where he enjoys spending his free time in far too many productions. Having tried acting, writing, and directing for the stage, Yan looks forward to reviewing. He believes that theatre should challenge both the audience and creators. Theatre, to him, is about constantly pushing the boundaries of what the medium can do while telling a compelling story.

Teo Xiao Ting is one of the five Citizen Reviewers selected from the 2019 Open Call application.

Xiao Ting recently graduated from Yale-NUS College with a major in Arts & Humanities and a minor in Psychology. Her writing practice started with poetry, and has since moved towards a sort of explicit response. She’s still feeling out the contours of a “reviewer”, and thinks that each review is actually an act of love that documents and critically engages with performance. She is feeding herself through freelancing as a subeditor, translator, and (her favourite yet) catsitter. Theatre is a precious space where other ways of being are materialised and imagined, and she looks forward to learning how best she can contribute given her inexperience with the art form and its history in Singapore.
